Start your day tour at the WowZulu KwaNzimakwe Welcome Centre on the R69 Road between Mpenjati Nature Reserve and Izinqolweni, above KwaNzimakwe (“place of the Nzimakwe”) Village. Here the local tribal leader and friendly villagers will welcome you warmly.
Hear stories of the area, watch crafters at work and learn to weave, drum or do traditional dance steps. Visit a cattle kraal, an organic garden and a sangoma, or traditional healer.
Then follow a mountain trail past a traditional Shembe Church to a viewing site with spectacular views of the area. Enjoy a lunch in the shade or, in the evening, have a traditional dinner while listening to stories and music, as the sun and the village settle for the night.
At KwaXolo, near KwaNzimakwe, let a registered tour guide take you on a 5-minute hike to a newly discovered cave with San paintings that are older than 100 000 years; a reminder of the rich heritage of the region.
