This rocky reef is named after the 3-mast ship -The Aliwal – that collided with the reef in 1849. It is located approximately 5km off the coast of KZN, with Umkomaas being the closest launch site.
As it is situated on the inside edge of the Mozambiquan current, divers can look forward to warm water and great visibility. Aliwal Shoal is home to a diversity of marine life: soft and hard coral , eels, turtles, fish, rays and sharks. Whale sharks, whales and dolphins also often visit the reef, which has become recognized as one of the top ten dive sites in the world.
